This business, called Glassbox, develops software known as “session replay.” It’s exactly what it says on the box: while you use a Glassbox-enabled app, it essentially takes a running series of screenshots to record your every interaction. How does it work? These apps, including, all rely on a specific company’s service. Most of these apps don’t disclose that they do this, and if they do, it’s not easy to find that disclosure anywhere you’d normally look. Over the past week, TechCrunch ran a piece with a startling headline: “Many popular iPhone apps secretly record your screen without asking.” What’s the deal with that? The TechCrunch reporter investigated and discovered a slew of apps, from those designed for banking to those created by hotels, airlines, and others, all directly record user screens while the app is in use. We’ll hit each of those stories in turn today, but let’s start with a story about apps that might be taking a peek at your screen even when you aren’t expecting them to do so.
